My Top 5 Films of 2020

Now we all know last year was difficult when it came to watching new movies, so I thought I would include 5 films that I have watched for the first time just this year that I highly recommend you check out.

Number 5

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Now yes I know this film came out in 2003 but I only got around to seeing it later this year when it was put on Netflix. So a quick overview, Andie a magazine editor giving her chance at a big break when she is asked to write about ‘How to lose a guy in 10 days’. Where as play boy Benjamin is tasked with making a girl fall in love with him, in order to secure a big marketing client. With these obstacles in place it leads to a brilliant and honestly bizarre romantic comedy that has so many twists and turns you don’t see coming. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have great chemistry and really work well together in the scene whether they are flirting or wanting to tear each others hair out. My favourite scene has to be when Andie meets Ben’s family. Not only do you get to see Ben’s family and learn more about him. You also get to see Andie fit in well with them and really seem part of the family. It is definitely a key turning point in the film.

Number 4

Diana: In her own words

My next choice is a documentary I watched a couple of months ago on Netflix. The title says it all really… We are played tapes from secret session Diana recorded with a voice coach in 1992 and 1993. She discusses her life from meeting the Prince to her life in the royal family. It really shows another side to everything she went through, with archive footage coinciding with what is being discussed and how she felt at the moments really hit hard and it rightly shows how she really was the peoples princess. I’m not going to mention a particular favourite scene as it is all increibly important and just brilliant.

Number 3

James Bond: Casino Royale

I know I know, I should have watched James Bond before now, but I just never got around to it. However I’m glad that I finally did. This is the first film we are introduced to Daniel Craig as James Bond and I do have to say he is one of my favourite. I feel he captures Bond brilliantly. I also like his relationship with Vesper. They balance each other well and work well as a team. From the beginning we were routing for them and it just makes a particular plot twist even more intense. My favourite scene is when Bond and Vesper first meet as we see their dynamic straight away and how they click with each other.

Number 2

Pixie

Now if you read my review of Pixie you’ll know it is just what 2020 needed. It involves drugs, priests and Irish gangsters. It is an action comedy that yes isn’t for the light hearted and can get quite gory, but overall I feel the storyline were strong, the characters were likeable and honestly a great soundtrack. We follow 3 people who want to get away from their old town and start new lives if for different reasons. My favourite scene is when they are negotiating a deal as it really shows each character for who they are, as well as their differences. It is not only funny but a key part of the deal. If you want an easy watch that will keep you entertained I would highly recommend you give Pixie a watch.

Number 1

1917

My Favourite film of the year is without a doubt 1917. It is probably best know as the film shot in “one take”. Obviously it wasn’t actually but I think Sam Mendes did a brilliant job in making his vision come to life on the screen. The 2019 film follows two world war one soldiers who have been sent on a mission to pass a message onto a sergeant before it is to late. They face multiple obstacles and it seems as though the whole world is against them. You really feel like you are on the journey with them. It heart breaking and shows just some of the horrors soldiers had to face. I feel its very eye opening and if for some reason you only watch one film this year, I would highly recommend making it this one. My favourite scene is one in which our two leading men are well on their way and having a discussion about one of the men back in the trenches, I feel this shows a side that is closer to normality fir the viewers as I doubt many were in the trenches where as plenty of people have had a conversation with their friends and laughed at the story. This is a side we are not usually shown of soldiers in films about the war.

So there you have it, let me know your top 5 films of 2020 in the comments below!
