Book Review: Book Lovers

Author: Emily Henry

Publisher: Penguin Books

Book lovers follows Nora – a literary agent who knows she’s not the ‘main character’. Meaning that she’s the polished character who like everything to have and be in its place. She is organised with a very meticulous schedule that she sticks to religiously. She is dedicated to her work and pretty well off because of it. She has had three boyfriends leave her for women more relaxed and free spirited. She is like a mother to her younger sister who needs a bit of help sometimes although she doesn’t like to admit it – although on paper Nora is not the protagonist most of us are used too, she is without doubt one of my favourites in literature.

The majority of the book takes place in a picturesque little town that was the inspiration for a book by one of Nora’s clients. Nora’s sister Libby (who is in her third trimester of her third pregnancy) convinces Nora to have a month long trip to the town of Sunshine Falls, in which Libby makes a list of things for Nora to do to help her achieve her ‘book life’. Some of these include ‘wear flannel’, ‘ date a local’, and ‘go skinny-dipping’. Although reluctant Nora indulges for Libby.

Now we all know I love an ‘enemies to lovers’ troupe, and this one has the perfect one. Enter Charlie Lastra – a no nonsense book editor who is business savvy and kind of a loner. Nora and Charlie are practically the same person, both of whom make horrible first impressions so its no wonder they don’t hit it off straight away. However as the book progresses so does they’re relationship which can also be placed under the troupe of ‘slow burn’ which has you screaming for them to ‘kiss already!’ way before they actually do. The book is in some ways incredibly meta. It doesn’t conform the the clichés whilst also making sure to have a satisfying ending.

Emily Henry creates a brilliant story with some characters you can’t help but love and I can guarantee you’ll catch yourself smiling at the pages.
