Film Review: The Wedding Planner

JLo and Matthew McConaughey in an early 2000’s romcom? Whats not to love?

Jennifer Lopez plays, the best wedding in her city. Mary is organised, level headed and can always be counted on to solve a problem. The only problem she hasn’t solved is her own romance.

When an opportunity to plan an A-list wedding is dropped in her lap, she takes the opportunity to make deal with her boss to make her a company partner if she can pull it off. After a meeting with the bride of the party, and is calling the office to inform them on how well the meeting went, she gets her shoe caught in a drain, in the middle of the road. Reluctant to leave the shoe and its expensive and part of her favourite set she is almost crushed by an industrial dumpster until a mysterious hero pulls her from harms way. The handsome stranger turns out to be a doctor and makes sure she’s okay. They end up going on an ‘unofficial’ date and almost kiss after they dance together. Mary is on Cloud 9 until she finds out that the Groom of her A list wedding turns out to be her mysterious hero.

This film does the perfect job of making you loathe a character in the beginning as McConaughey’s character Steve is an arrogant, self righteous character who is very smug. However as the film goes on we see a softer side as we get to know him and by the end we are routing for him.

One of my things about this film is the contrast in scenes. For example when Mary and Steve are dancing in the park its gentle, kind and romantic. Whereas when they’re dancing in the class its fiery, tense and quite bitter. Another contrast is their weddings, Steve and Frans is large, lavish and very in your face where as Mary and Massimo’s isn’t spoken about until its happening, has 3 guest and takes place in a court house.

My favourite scene is the final reunion, where its almost full circle and mimics their ‘first date’ and I really think they just did it perfectly and makes the heart happy

It’s very hard to talk about this film without spoiling it completely and I’m not sure I’ve done it justice so all I can say is check it out on Amazon Prime right now.
