TV Review: Ginny and Georgia

Season 2 of Ginny and Georgia premiered on Netflix January 5th this year, after an incredibly successful first season (This is your official spoiler warning)

This season follows Ginny dealing with the aftermath of the first season finale. She has to navigate her friends not speaking to her, secrets she’s been told about her mother and a potential relationship that lead to the end of her friendship. Georgia is dealing with her children running away to briefly live with Ginny’s dad, organising a wedding and trying to win over her soon to be husbands family and making sure her secrets stay under wraps.

The first few episodes of the season drag on if I’m honest. Its early established that Ginny is still upset with Georgia and there’s an atmosphere and that Max is still annoyed with Ginny and Abby, by the time we get to episode 3 personally with the whole Max and Ginny situation I was very much at the “get over it” stage. Spoiler: they do pretty soon after.

I think one of my favourite parts of this season is Ginny and Marcus’ relationship. The chemistry the two actors have really comes across on the screen and it makes the relationship seems so happy and real. It’s the perfect representation of first love and makes the end of the season all that more heart wrenching.

The show does discuss and show mental health and several different conditions. We see Ginny struggle and continue to struggle even whilst she is attending therapy, this is oddly refreshing as usually in television land characters who are struggling usually get put in therapy or some form of treatment and magically they’re fine and its never discussed again. This show doesn’t do that they show that its still a long road but theirs hope which I think is a good and real message to send. Marcus’ relapse in his depression is also very hard hitting but I think a brilliant and real representation of the condition.

The only downside of this season is probably the fact that Georgia didn’t really have that much change or growth, yes in the end she did eventually have some but there were many times during the season where it felt she was just slotting in to the story but doing her own thing and didn’t really relate to what Ginny was doing and as the show is ‘Ginny and Georgia’ it seems vital they grow together. However I do love when we see flashbacks of her life when Ginny was younger and how she adapted and coped with the situation she’s been put in. (Plus the casting was incredible)

Ginny and Georgia season 1 and 2 are available to stream on Netflix now!
