My Top 5: 90’s Films

Although I just missed out on the 90’s it is safe to say they have some great movies, so if you haven’t guessed, this is going to be my Top 5 Films of the 90’s.

Number 5

Mrs Doubtfire

In at number 5 is probably one of the legendary Robin Williams’ most popular films. Released in 1993 the film follows Daniel Hillard, as he’s going through a divorce with his wife. He disguises himself as a nanny and is hired by his unsuspecting soon to be ex wife so he can spend more time with his children. Now yes that concept might sound a bit weird but with Robins incredible acting and improv skills it really works and has now become a classic. It also has a fairly high billed cast including Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan. My favourite scene has to be the “Dude looks like a lady” montage because we all know I love a montage and let’s be honest they chose the perfect song. I like how this is an inside to Daniel learning to be Mrs Doubtfire as well as seeing him break character at certain point and it feels like as an audience we’re in on the secret.

Number 4

10 Things I Hate About You

Next up is probably best known for being loosely based of “The taming of the Shrew” by Shakespeare. Released in 1999 (so just making the cut), I feel this is one of the most popular films on this list. The film focuses on two sisters, the younger Bianca, being told she cannot date until her older sister Kat does. However Kat is known for hating people and being angry at the world. One of Bianca’s many suitors set a plan to pay someone to date Kat so that he can’t date Bianca. It takes them some time to find someone who isn’t scared of Kat. School bad boy Patrick ends up being the man for the job, its just convincing Kat to date him that’s the next challenge. This film is definitely a classic, a has some hilarious and iconic lines and moments. My favourite scene is without a doubt the “I love you baby” scene, which will without a doubt have you singing and laughing and really what more could you want?

Number 3

Four Weddings and A Funeral

Another well known film of the 90s is Four Weddings and. Funeral, another brilliant classic. Released in 1994 the film follows the same group of friends as they attend 5 social events (I’m sure from the title you can guess what they are). This film will have you laughing but will also definitely bring on the tears so watch with caution. It of course stars Hugh Grant known for his 90s/00’s Rom com roles. The friendship group we follow is so loveable and really make the film. There was also the “sequel” for Red Nose Day in 2019 that showed where the characters are now and followed the wedding of Charles’ and Carries daughter played by Lily James. My favourite scene is when Charles is about to get married and his brother David intervenes. I think it was a good and big twist on the usual objection scenes as this time the groom had to make the announcement about him self.

Number 2

The Mummy

Now a slight shift in genre from my other choices for this list. The Mummy released in 1999, after an archaeological goes wrong and a cursed Mummy is brought back to life, ready to wreck havoc on the world. We follow American adventurer, Rick O’Connell, British Egyptologist, Evelyn, and her brother Jonathan as they set off to find the town where all this is happening and help in anyway they can. Now I know I definitely haven’t done this justice but I really can’t recommend this movie highly enough it has the right amount of adventure and comedy as well as characters you’re guaranteed to fall in love with. It also stars Brendan Fraser as Rick your cool guy hero, Rachel Weisz as Evelyn who is just as badass and can stand up for herself and John Hannah as Jonathan who is really a comedic sidekick but fun to watch none the less. My favourite scene is the race for the keys, it shows off each character personality brilliantly and is the perfect blend of action and comedy.

Number 1

The Wedding Singer

In at number one is a film I’ve spoken about before and will continue to do so because I just love it so much. The Wedding Singer released in 1998 is the first in the Adam Sandler/ Drew Barrymore trilogy. Following Robbie a heart broken wedding singer, who get roped in helping waitress Julia in planning her wedding, falling for her in the process. Theres nothing I can say that will really do this film justice so all I can say is give it a watch asap. My favourite scene has to be the aeroplane scene, if your wondering why just watch it and you’ll know exactly why (but warning includes major spoilers)
