Top 5 Scottish Actors

As a fellow Scot, I thought it would be a good time to give a list of some of my favourite Scottish actors that I highly recommend you check out.

Number 5

Robert Carlyle

Acting since 1991, Carlyle has had a brilliant career. Starring in films such as Trainspotting and The Full Monty, as well as having a large television presence starring as the titular character in Hamish McBeth, The War of Worlds and ABC’s high rating show Once Upon A Time as Rumpelstiltskin. His most recent film is 2019’s Beatle music based fantasy film Yesterday in which he plays a present day John Lennon. Carlyle is a chameleon actor and can inhabit multiple roles, we have seen him play hero and villian and does both with ease. My favourite role of his is as Rumpelstiltskin it is the first role I properly saw him and I have to say he plays the part fanatically, he plays multiple characters in the series whilst still on being the one. It takes a great actor to be able to do so and Carlyle definitely does.

Number 4

Richard Madden

Madden began acting in the year 2000 at the age of just 14. As his career has gone on he has only gone on to greater and more prominent roles. He is best know as Robb Stark in the hit TV show Game of Thrones. He also created quite the storm as David Budd in the 2018 BBC drama The Bodyguard. He has also had many leading roles on the silver screen, he starred along side Lily James as Kit in the 2015 live action remake of Cinderella, as well as playing agent to the stars John Reid in Elton John’s 2019 biopic starring Taron Egerton Rocketman. My favourite role of his is Kit from Cinderella, this is one of his roles that isn’t constantly filmed with doom and gloom and in need to be so serious. Although he embodies all his roles very well I feel that this one is refreshing.

Number 3

David Tennant

Acting since 1988, Tennant has a phenomenal Filmography credit list. Probably best know for his role as the 10th Doctor on BBC shows Doctor Who, in which he was voted the most popular doctor in a poll taken by over 50,000 of the shows fans. He also excelled in another BBC drama Broadchurch in which he played a detective. He can also take on a villainous role that of Kilgrave in Jessica Jones and Crowley in Good Omens along side Michael Sheen. Voice acting also makes multiple appearances on his filmography credits, these include the lead role in The Highway Rat, Scrooge McDuck in Duck Tales, even making appearances on Family Guy. My favourite role of his is as the Doctor, he was the Doctor on my screen as I grew up and as I have watched others try and fill the position, it is very clear that none do it as well.

Number 2

Ewan McGregor

McGregor began acting in 1993 at the age of 22, first starring in a television mini series. One of his first big roles that he’s is often recognised for is Renton in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. He has had multiple roles in big budget films, including Christoper Robin, Beauty and the Beast and most recently as the villain in Birds of Prey. Now one of his most well known and iconic roles that is also my favourite of his is as Obi – Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel films. He embodies the role so well and it doesn’t seem as though he is just doing an impression of Alec Guinness. He plays the role perfectly and really adds depth to the character we didn’t get in the original trilogy and McGregor was the perfect person for the part.

Number 1

James McAvoy

In at number 1 with over 40 roles on his Filmography credit list. He began acting in 1995 and his breakout role can arguably be claimed as Steve in original UK version of the sitcom Shameless. He is also the face of many famous roles such as Mr Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia, as Johnny in Penelope. He starred alongside Kiera Knightly in Atonement as Robbie. He has also done multiple voice acting roles, including Arthur in Arthur Christmas and Gnomeo in Gnomeo and Juliet. One of his most impressive role is the multiple he plays in Glass and Split in which he plays over 23 different roles, all over different ages and genders. He plays all of them brilliantly and very believable. My favourite role of his is another of his most famous, Charles Xavier in the X-men prequels. He portrays a young Charles Xavier very well and it doesn’t seem as though he is just doing a Patrick Stewart impression. He also shows different sides to the character that weren’t explored in the originals. Its also important to add how good he is at accents as he has to put one on for pretty much all of his roles and they are brilliant.
