Book Review: The Hating Game

Author: Sally Thorne

Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks

Okay so as you can probably tell this weeks review is a bit different. One of my resolutions this year was to get back into reading again and its safe to say I did. I wasn’t planning on posting any book reviews but with The Hating Game I couldn’t not.

Sally Thorne gives us the brilliant story of Lucy and Josh, two work rivals who spend everyday sitting opposite each other, playing games with the goal of constantly tormenting the other. When their ideal job is posted at work they are now not only hell bend on getting the job but beating their biggest enemy whilst their at it.

Now I’m not going to lie, there are many of the Romcom cliche’s but Thorne writes them so well and so uniquely through the characters eyes that it just makes you fall more in love with the characters and their bizarre relationship.

Im not usually one who loves characters but in this case Lucy quickly became one of my favourite protagonists. They way she’s described is bubbly and quirky but more than anything just real. I feel like I can relate to this character and see her in people I know which makes me more compelled to the book.

As the book progresses I also love how she develops Josh’s character and their quick fire banter is one of my favourite thing about the book, the character dynamics are written so well and it really conveys their emotions well. As well as the descriptions of the people and places, I found it very easy to visualise what is being described.

The story progresses at a great pace, so much happens but the pace of the book is very rapid whether it be the character dialogue or the events taking place

I also love how she reveals who wins their “big competition” I fully expected it to go the standard way when authors write a competition but Thorne takes a different route that really pays off.

As you can tell I would highly recommend this book and advise you pick a copy up as soon as you can.
