This week I have another TV show review

The Great is set in Russia in the 18th Century and follows the story of a woman who marries the Emperor of Russia who is rude, selfish and all round immature. In the first episode its clear he is not a fit leader and all of they ways she feels she can help the country are dismissed because she’s a woman. She soon comes to the conclusion that the only way out of the situation is to kill the Emperor and take over as Russia’s leader.

It’s only one season so far, with only ten episodes. The beginning of the series is spent introducing the characters and following Catherine as she grows her plan to over throw the Emperor. The episodes are about an hour long each, but are very faced pace and humorous, keeping the audiences attention.

The cast is incredibly talented and each play their role brilliantly. Elle Fanning plays the young, smart and outspoken Catherine to defies the stereotype of women in the court and spends a lot of her time devising plans and playing the long game to help Russia. Nicholas Hoult plays the Emperor who is with lack of a better phrase, a horrible person with no morals. Many of the supporting cast include Pheobe Fox, Gwilym Lee, Sacha Dhawan and Adam Godley just to name a few.

One thing I noticed is that pretty much every main character goes through significant character development. Especially Orlo and Grigor who instead of spending all of their time trying to please the Emperor, go through some tough times and come out the other side in very different places. I also really like Catherine and Elizabeth’s relationship.

I’m very excited for season 2, partially as the last 15 minutes had me on the edge of my seat and I can’t wait until its back. Its rated an 18 and it definitely should be, a quick warning its not for the faint hearted, but I very much would recommend if you in need of something new.
